Next Sunday an elusive elite field lines up at the Ironman 70.3 Austin start-line.

Yvonne van Vlerken belongs, with Kate Bevilaqua/AUS, Amy Marsh/USA, Amanda Stevens/U.S. and Tenille Hoogland/CAN to the favorites for the title in the women's race. In the men Chris "Macca" McCormack, highly motivated after his race went off rail in Kona two weeks ago, will take it on a strong field of men.

Last July Yvonne van Vlerken had to undergo an unplanned surgery, in which a significantly large lipoma (fat tumor) had to be surgically removed from her groin, directly in the seating area of the athlete. Out of an originally misdiagnosed „cyst" and a predicted 15-minute small surgical intervention became a 2-hour surgery with several weeks break from training, especially in cycling as sitting on a saddle was impossible.

This lead to a cancellation of the Ironman 70.3 European Championship in Wiesbaden and another qualifier which left van Vlerken without a slot for the Ironman World Champs in Kona. Yvonne van Vlerken who won the Austrian traditional race, the Transvorarlberg Triathlon (www.transvorarlberg.at) at her re-entry into the second half of the competition season, prepared in Santa
Monica/ California very intensively and placed a good 3rd at Ironman 70.3 Cozumel in her build up. Accordingly confident van Vlerken is looking forward to the race on the demanding course in the Lone Star State.

(Quote): "I need a home base for my training and I have found that in Santa Monica, where my preparations have gone very well so far. I look so much forward to race this Sunday, I feel very fit and ready. After this race my
calendar contains two more races, the highlight will be my fourth start at Ironman Cozumel, one of my favourite races. "
